Free search assistance

When registry matching is not enough, approved volunteers may help identify lawful public and official research paths.

What search assistance can do

Search assistance may help organize clues, identify record custodians, locate official forms, and review public information. It is free, depends on volunteer availability, and does not guarantee a result.

What volunteers cannot do

  • Access sealed records without legal authority.
  • Impersonate relatives or government employees.
  • Contact people outside your approved case without safeguards.
  • Provide legal advice, DNA conclusions, or mental-health counseling.
  • Charge you for registry assistance.

Do not submit Social Security numbers, passwords, financial records, or identity-document images.
